Czech police arrest 14 people suspected of human trafficking

Czech police have arrested 14 individuals, including 13 foreigners and one Czech citizen, suspected of smuggling at least a thousand illegal migrants from Turkey to Western Europe since 2021. The smugglers earned at least €1 million from their activities and could face up to 16 years in prison if convicted. Officials noted that the migrants typically use the Czech Republic as a transit country and do not apply for asylum there. Checks at the border with Slovakia were lifted in February, where most migrants were attempting to reach Europe from Syria.
