Researchers from Tel Aviv University have discovered that plants emit click-like sounds unique to each species when under stress. They used ultrasonic microphones to record sounds from tomato, grape vine, tobacco, wheat, corn, cactus and henbit plants in an acoustic box that had no background Noise. The team subjected the plants to different treatments, including dehydration, stem removal and leaving them untouched. They found that plants emitted sounds at frequencies of 40 to 80 kilohertz when under stress, and that machines could identify the type of Plant and level of stress by analysing the noises captured.
