U.S. trade dominates Panama Canal traffic. ‘Severe’ drought is threatening the long-term future of the century-old shipping route

The Panama Canal Authority has announced that it will reduce the number of daily transits mostly in Panamax locks to conserve water, with transits decreasing from 36 to 34 a day to 32 to 30. The restrictions have been imposed to postpone water depth restrictions, which would impact the amount of freight vessels can carry. The Panama Canal is a key trade gateway for the US, with 40% of all US container traffic travelling through it each year. A severe drought is threatening the long-term future of the century-old shipping route.
