Emergency callers told don’t dial 999 as fault hits national system

A technical Fault affecting the national 999 Emergency call system has led police forces across the UK to urge callers not to dial the number. The fault, which has been described as "significant", affects BT's ability to route calls to individual forces. Scotland Yard advised London residents to use 101 instead, while other forces have given similar advice. Fire and rescue services across the UK have also issued statements advising people to contact them via alternative phone numbers. Patients in eastern England have been advised to call 111 in the event of an emergency.
