The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating a Ford recall of over 250,000 Explorer Suvs due to complaints about repairs intended to prevent the vehicles from unexpectedly rolling away while placed in park. The recall was due to fractures of a rear axle mounting bolt that could lead the drive shaft to disconnect. Although the problem was addressed by a Ford software update designed to apply the electronic parking brake if the drive shaft failed, two complaints from vehicle owners reported erratic behavior following the repair. No injuries were reported, and Ford is working with the NHTSA on the matter.
