Tropical Storms Cindy, Bret Show Aggressive Start to Atlantic Hurricane Season

Tropical Storm Cindy and Tropical Storm Bret marked the first time two storms were recorded in the tropical Atlantic in June since 1851, according to the US National Hurricane Center. The two events are a sign of an early and aggressive start to the hurricane season, which began on 1 June. Experts have attributed the early storms to high sea temperatures caused by a combination of global warming, natural variability and the ocean’s recovery from pollution. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has forecast between 12 and 17 named storms for this year, including up to four major hurricanes.
