Tamil Nadu Police Launches New Scheme for Women Travelling Alone at Night, Releases Helplines

The Tamil Nadu Police in India have launched a scheme called ‘Pengal Pathukaaptu Thittam’ (Women Safety Scheme) to provide women travelling alone at night with a police patrol vehicle to reach their homes safely. Women can use the police patrol vehicle by dialling helpline numbers 1091, 112, 044-23452365 and 044-28447701. The scheme has been launched as more women are working in different shifts and, at times, get dropped at a place by the office vehicle from where they have to walk alone to their home. Patrol cars attached to a police station with at least two policemen patrol streets from 10 pm every week.
