South Africa’s green energy transition challenges

The Komati power plant in South Africa's coal belt is set to be repurposed as a wind and solar power plant with battery storage, in a pilot project that will provide a template for the country's transition to clean energy. While the World Bank has provided a $490m loan for the project, concerns have been raised about the financing model, which is mostly loans and guarantees, as South Africa is already in "a significant amount of debt". Some have also called for multilateral lenders to factor in the climate crisis when granting funding to developing countries.
