Time running out for cuckoos as climate change throws seasonal clocks out of sync

Cuckoos are struggling to adjust their migration patterns to keep pace with climate change, according to new research from the British Trust for Ornithology. Whilst most species have adapted their arrival times in Europe to match earlier spring conditions, Cuckoos that breed in Europe are remaining in West Africa because the spring rains, which bring the invertebrates they eat, have not changed their start time. The time spent feeding ahead of migration is vital for the birds’ energy levels, but arriving later in Europe can result in a lack of prey and poor breeding sites. Cuckoo numbers in England have dropped by 71% since 1995.
