New Zealand's university and research sector has been in crisis for some time due to funding shortfalls and sweeping redundancies. The research funding target of 2% of GDP has been reiterated in this year's budget, but the lack of new funding is putting the entire research Strategy at risk. University cuts threaten the government's research strategy, and the missing funds needed to maintain viable and comprehensive universities are small in the overall scheme of things.
