Amsterdam-based improv comedy club Boom Chicago, founded by two expat Americans, launched the careers of Seth Meyers, Amber Ruffin, Jordan Peele and other future comedy stars, despite initial skepticism from a city clerk who warned that Dutch people don't want to see shows in English. Boom Chicago, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year, enabled its performers to be on stage several nights a week, something that wasn't possible in Chicago. Meyers, who is heading back to Amsterdam for the anniversary celebrations, described the city's audiences as discerning.
