Montana officials minimize first-of-its-kind climate lawsuit ahead of final arguments

Montana officials have sought to downplay a climate lawsuit brought by 16 young plaintiffs who say they are being harmed by climate change. The plaintiffs, aged between five and 22, argue that Montana is violating their constitutional rights by preventing agencies from considering the impact of greenhouse gases when issuing permits for fossil fuel development. Montana’s Republican attorney general argued that a victory for the plaintiffs would not change approvals for fossil fuel projects. Final arguments were presented in the case on Tuesday.
