Study: Race must be a factor in combatting air pollution

A new Study from the University of California San Diego reveals that cutting greenhouse gases based on income or other factors instead of race could result in communities of color suffering more from Air Pollution. The study focused on PM 2.5 particle pollution, which is particularly harmful due to its small size. The Biden administration has introduced several initiatives to address environmental justice issues, including the Justice40 program, which directs 40% of federal funding to disadvantaged communities, but a screening tool for the program has been criticized for not explicitly including race. Targeted policy is necessary to address equity issues.
