The Governor’s Early Literacy Foundation in Tennessee is sending free books to over 200,000 students enrolled in public school, with the aim of combating learning loss over the summer and promoting a culture of reading. The K-3 Home Library program, in collaboration with Scholastic publishing, will deliver six packages of grade-level books directly to the homes of participants. Since 2020, the program has grown by 528%, placing over 3.1 million books in the homes of over 509,000 elementary school students and teachers. Research shows that reading four to six books over the summer can mitigate or reverse the “summer slide.”
