The Italian Coastguard has rescued 242 migrants, some of whom may be refugees, off the coast of Lampedusa island. The migrants were crammed into five small boats, with one boat carrying 52 men and three women from India, Eritrea, Syria, Egypt, and Pakistan. The EU is close to agreeing on a plan where migrants will be looked after by almost all of the 27 member states, rather than just the southern states along the Mediterranean. The Central Mediterranean remains the most active route into the EU, accounting for nearly half of the irregular entries in 2023.
