Mali’s military junta wants peacekeeping force to leave “without delay”

Mali's interim Military Junta has called for the United Nations peacekeeping mission in the country, MINUSMA, to leave "without delay". Security concerns have led to two coups in 2020 and 2021, and the junta has been at odds with MINUSMA and other international allies. The Security Council must decide on a resolution to extend MINUSMA's mandate in Mali by June 30, requiring at least nine votes in favour and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, Britain or France to pass. The junta has rejected Western allies and turned to Russia for military aid, raising concerns about the presence of the Russian private military contractor Wagner in the region. Violence has increased in the region since 2015 with attacks by groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State, leading to thousands of deaths and over six million people displaced.
