Kenya: Lawmakers passes budget, biggest in country’s history

Kenya's parliament has passed the budget for the financial year 2023/24, which at Sh3.679tn ($33.5bn) is the largest in the country's history. The allocation for the executive is Sh2.1tn, while parliament gets Sh40bn and the judiciary and judicial service commission receive Sh22.9bn. The budget is to be financed by new taxes, including on imported fish, beauty products and gambling, which should generate €2bn ($2.3bn) in revenue. The government also plans to introduce a payroll levy to finance a low-cost housing programme. Kenya's public debt stands at $65bn, or 67% of GDP.
