US Uses New Law to Target Gun Trafficking to Mexico

The Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, signed by President Joe Biden in June 2022, has given US prosecutors a powerful tool to combat the illicit flow of weapons from the US to drug cartels in Mexico. The legislation introduced the first major changes to US gun safety laws since the federal assault weapons ban of 1994, establishing a standalone firearms-trafficking conspiracy offence punishable by up to 15 years in prison. In the year since its introduction, more than 100 people have been charged under its Gun Trafficking and straw purchasing provisions. The number of weapons smuggled into Mexico is believed to be enormous.
