Winnipeg man says he wanted federal prison sentence because of better addiction supports

A Winnipeg man with a cocaine addiction has said that a Federal Prison Sentence will give him a better chance of staying clean after he is released than a provincial jail sentence. Jason Walmsley, 34, who has previously spent time in a provincial jail, made the comments in an interview from inside the federal Stony Mountain Institution. Research suggests that Walmsley’s preference for prison over a provincial jail is not unique in Canada and is due to greater access to rehabilitative programs and better conditions in federal prisons. However, experts say it should bother society that people choose the most severe form of punishment.
