Wildfires and climate change are transforming some of Canada's Boreal Forests into savannahs, according to a recently published paper by Natural Resources Canada. The research found that where fires have recurred more quickly, aspens dominated in the place of conifers, and growth beneath the trees was far less established. Experts say fires are a natural aspect of a forest's life cycle but are becoming larger and more intense, changing what grows back. Improved Fire management, by allowing some fires to burn and increasing the number of prescribed burns, could help scale back the number of out-of-control, large-scale fires.
