As car thefts spike, many thieves slip through U.S. border unchecked

Car thefts in the US have surged to over one million in 2022, with many stolen vehicles smuggled out of the country to destinations such as West Africa and the Dominican Republic. Thousands of Stolen Cars are also driven into Mexico, slipping past US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at major ports of entry. License plate readers recorded 2,829 stolen vehicles driven into Mexico at checkpoints in California, Arizona, and Texas, but CBP seized just 144 stolen cars on their way into Mexico. Luxury vehicles are the most commonly seized at ports of entry.
