US-based aid group GiveDirectly has revealed that $900,000 was Stolen from its Congo programmes by members of the organisation, who conspired with outsiders. The fraud occurred between August 2022 and January 2023, and involved the diversion of aid intended for over 1,700 families in the region. GiveDirectly said that the fraud was made possible by a change in payment processes, made to enable work in a remote, insecure region of the country. An investigation is ongoing and while a small amount of the funds have been recovered, the majority are likely to be "uncoverable".
