The Manipur government has extended its ban on internet services until June 15 due to concerns that anti-social elements may use social media to incite violence. The ban was first imposed on May 3 following ethnic violence that resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people and left 310 others injured. The clashes began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. Meiteis account for about 53% of Manipur’s population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley.
