Mali’s sole passenger train resumes service after a 5-year hiatus

Mali has resumed its Passenger Train service after a five-year break, with the first journey witnessing the Governor of Kayes, Colonel Moussa Soumare, and several passengers. The Bamako-Kayes line, part of a track linking Bamako with the Senegalese capital, was halted in May 2018 due to poor maintenance, adding to transport problems in the country. The rehabilitation of the line had suffered delays for over 15 years and has cost $10m, which the economy and finance ministry said would be recouped over the first two years of operation.
