Arab Israelis have staged protests in the north of the country following the deaths of five people in one of the worst crime waves in recent years. The five, including a 15-year-old, were shot dead at a car wash in Yafia, near Nazareth. Nearly 100 people have died in crime-related violence in Arab Israeli communities this year, according to NGOs. Demonstrators at the protest held banners reading “it is my right to live in safety” and “Yafia has lost her sons”. Experts suggest Arab gangs have large quantities of illegal weapons and are involved in drugs, arms and human trafficking, prostitution, extortion and money laundering.
