How NYC officials failed to prepare for an air quality crisis

New York City failed to adequately prepare for the air quality crisis caused by smoke from wildfires in Nova Scotia that engulfed the city on June 7, 2022, according to advocates and public health experts. Despite receiving advance warnings from state and federal authorities, mask distribution efforts came well after the pollution had descended over the tri-state area. The air quality index in parts of Brooklyn reached 484, nearly double San Francisco’s highest hourly reading during California’s 2020 fire season. Vulnerable populations, such as older adults, pregnant people, and children, are particularly susceptible to the health risks associated with wildfire smoke exposure.
