Kenya is to convert the Shakahola forest, where over 250 people linked to a doomsday cult were buried, into a national memorial site. Cult leader Paul Nthenge Mackenzie is facing charges relating to the case, accused of driving his followers to death by preaching that starvation was the only path to God. Nine more bodies were recently exhumed, taking the death toll to 251. While starvation appears to be the main cause of death, some victims were found to have been strangled, beaten or suffocated. Police have arrested 35 people, while 95 have been rescued and 613 are missing.
