Odisha Triple Train Tragedy: NCRB Data Shows How Derailment Cases Have Come Down

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reported a total of 17,993 cases of railway accidents in India in 2021, with only 0.10% of cases happening due to derailments. The majority of incidents were "Fall from Trains or Collision with People at Track," accounting for 67% of such mishaps and 12,181 death cases out of a total of 17,993. Maharashtra had the highest number of accidents, followed by West Bengal. Uttar Pradesh accounted for the highest number of railway crossing accidents. Between 2017 and 2021, 70% of railway accident deaths were due to driver error.
