Syria’s Assad accuses France of ‘hysteria’ for calling to put him on trial

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has accused France of "hysteria" and seeking to restore the legacy of the colonial era after French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna called for him to be put on trial for his role in the civil war. Three Syrian nationals, all former or current advisers of Assad, were charged in France with complicity in crimes against humanity and war crimes. The exchange comes after Syria was readmitted to the Arab League and ahead of the Brussels VII Conference on Supporting the future of Syria and the region. France and the EU find themselves in awkward positions as they seek to maintain strong relations with the Arab League.
