French authorities have begun demolishing homes in a large slum on the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, as part of an operation against substandard housing and illegal migration. The Majicavo slum is one of around 1,000 substandard homes to be destroyed, with 135 dwellings razed so far. The demolition of Talus 2 was originally scheduled for 25 April, but was suspended by a court decision. Two subsequent legal rulings authorised the French state to proceed. Some families have lamented the government for taking such a decision without prior consideration of their financial status to relocate.
