Meta fined a record $1.3 billion over EU user data transfers to the U.S.

Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has been Fined a record €1.2bn ($1.3bn) by European privacy regulators for transferring EU user data to the US, despite a European Court of Justice ruling that the framework for transferring such data to America did not protect Europeans from US surveillance. The Irish Data Protection Commission that oversees Meta's EU operations claimed the company infringed the bloc's General Data Protection Regulation. The fine is the largest ever issued for a GDPR breach, surpassing the €746m charge against Amazon in 2021. Meta has said it will appeal the decision and the fine.
