Nigeria hosted its National Surfing Festival in Tarkwa Bay, Lagos, over the weekend, with 30 contenders taking part in the event. The competition, which offers youths a potential way out of crime and violence, is seen as an opportunity for Nigeria to become a popular surfing spot on the continent. Lagos has an 850 km coastline, but many of its beaches are polluted, with oil tankers and pipelines, making surfing unlikely. Nigeria joined the International Surfing Association in 2014. The event is a chance to participate in "world-class competitions" and "enhanced performance in both event judging and coaching".
