Burkina: activists arrested for “inciting an armed crowd”

Six civil society actors in Burkina Faso have been arrested for criminal association, disclosure of false information, and incitement to an armed or unarmed crowd after audio messages were broadcast on social media calling for the burning of the palace of Mogho Naaba, the traditional leader of the Mossis ethnic group. The prosecutor stated that the arrests were made due to evidence that the individuals committed serious acts and were not arrested for their opinions. Burkina Faso has been caught in a spiral of jihadist violence since 2015, resulting in over 10,000 deaths and two million internally displaced persons.
