How the American Dream convinced people loneliness is normal

The Surgeon General of the United States has declared that Loneliness is an epidemic in the United States and that it takes as deadly a toll as smoking upon the population of the United States. He cites the gradual withering of longstanding institutions, decreased engagement with churches, the fraying bonds of extended families as contributing factors to the epidemic of loneliness. However, many of the Frontier myths that have been popular in the United States for centuries - such as the idea that going out into the vast landscapes of the country and connecting with the wilderness would make Americans happy - have been rejected by a newer generation of Americans who are aware of the negative consequences of loneliness.

Some of the modernizing forces that stitched the United States together in the first place - commerce, communication, roads - are now part of what isolates people.
