Asylum-Seekers From Mexico Hope for US Entry After Title 42 End

In the new regulation, which took effect on Friday, most Migrants who try to enter the United States by crossing the border without first seeking protection will be presumed ineligible for asylum. This change is a result of the expiration of Title 42, a COVID-inspired provision that allowed the U.S. government to turn away asylum-seekers for public health reasons. Mexican migrants, who make up a third of all migrants caught by U.S. Border Patrol, were expelled under Title 42 more than 90% of the time in 2021 and 2022. Families from Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Nicaragua as well as Mexico were present at the Tijuana shelter on Friday. Many migrants fleeing political violence or domestic abuse at home, trauma that is often made worse during the overland journey, are present at the shelter.
