Governor Gavin Newsom of California has announced that the state's Budget Deficit has grown to nearly $32 billion. The deficit is part of Newsom's overall proposal for a $306 billion budget, by far the largest state budget in the nation. Republicans in the state Legislature have blasted Newsom's proposed cuts to key programs, while Democrats in the state Senate want to raise taxes on 2,500 of the largest companies in order to cut taxes for most other businesses. Newsom has maintained most of the cuts in his revised proposal, but he's also protected spending in other key priority areas, such as expanding Medicaid to everyone who is eligible regardless of their immigration status and allowing people to use Medicaid money to pay for rent. He's also proposed adding 14 positions at the California Energy Commission to track and oversee oil prices.
