One pregnant woman or newborn dies every 7 seconds: new UN report

The UN World Health Organization (WHO) has released a Report stating that global progress in reducing the premature deaths of pregnant women, mothers and babies has stagnated for the past eight years due to decreasing investments in maternal and Newborn health. The report states that 1.9 million stillbirths and 2.3 million newborn deaths occur every year, and that over 4.5 million women and babies die every year during pregnancy, childbirth or the first weeks after birth. The report stresses the need for improved maternal and newborn health, including access to quality, affordable healthcare, skilled and motivated health workers, and interventions targeting the poorest women and those in vulnerable situations.
