Skip the GP for common illnesses under PM’s plan to help NHS

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister's special adviser on primary care, is launching a plan to end the "8am scramble" for appointments by switching patients from GPs to pharmacies. The seven common conditions that will no longer require a GP appointment include sinusitis, earache, sore throat, infected insect bite, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections. Women will be able to get contraception from a pharmacy rather than a GP, and pharmacies will provide blood tests for people at moderate risk of heart attack or stroke. Pharmacies will also provide prescriptions for seven conditions - sinusitis, earache, sore throat, infected insect bite, impetigo, shingles, and uncomplicated urinary tract infections - without patients needing a GP appointment. The NHS is targeting two million people to get their prescriptions via a pharmacy by 2024.
