Brazil’s Amazon Megaprojects Threaten Lula’s Green Ambitions

Since taking office, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has been trying to improve his environmental record, but activists and experts say he faces a number of difficult challenges if he wants to keep his promises. One of these challenges is a series of large infrastructure projects that would damage the Amazon rainforest and potentially hurt the economy. Another is a highway that would slice through some of the Amazon rainforest's most protected areas. If completed, it would be a major setback for Lula's environmental goals.
