Sudan’s warring parties hold first negotiations in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi-led effort to get Sudan's warring factions to the negotiating table has begun with the first talks in Jeddah. The talks are aimed at firming up a shaky cease-fire after three weeks of fierce fighting that has killed hundreds and pushed the African country to the brink of collapse. The fighting has turned Sudan's capital of Khartoum and other urban areas into battlefields. There is increasing concern for those trapped and displaced by the fighting, and aid workers and civilians have said there is a dire lack of basic services, medical care, food and water. The talks in Jeddah are part of an initiative proposed by Saudi Arabia and the United States. They would also discuss providing protection to civilian infrastructure, including health facilities. The RSF delegation has left for Jeddah, but the talks may be exploratory rather than concrete. achieving a "lasting cease-fire" will need more than one meeting.
