Reporters Without Borders has released a report on the state of press freedom around the world, and China has fallen four places on the global index to 179th place. North Korea and Vietnam are also at the bottom of the list. The report notes that the Asia-Pacific "continues to have some of the world's worst regimes for journalists." The United States has also fallen three places to 45th on the index. In China, many journalists are changing careers because of all-encompassing controls on media reporting by the propaganda arm of the ruling Chinese Communist Party. Hong Kong's press freedom has largely been extinguished under a draconian national security law imposed by Beijing in 2020.
