Second US warship arrives off Port Sudan as pressure builds to evacuate citizens

The USS Lewis B. Puller support ship has arrived off the coast of Port Sudan, as pressure builds to evacuate citizens from the country. The Pentagon has deployed two ships to Sudan to facilitate the evacuation of American citizens if orders are given to do so. The Biden administration has been one of the first foreign governments to evacuate its diplomatic personnel from Khartoum, but the US remains one of the few countries that has not launched an effort to evacuate its citizens. The ceasefire that took effect at midnight on Monday has prompted the UK to establish Royal Air Force flights out of an airfield near Khartoum in a bid to evacuate those of the estimated 4,000 UK citizens in Sudan who want to leave. There are an estimated 16,000 US citizens remaining in Sudan, and only "dozens" of Americans have expressed interest in leaving. The Pentagon has also considered sending troops ashore in Port Sudan to facilitate evacuations.
