Three men have been charged with the murder of gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf, who were shot dead by the assailants while being escorted into a hospital for a medical check-up. The men, who police say had been planning the attack for some time, have confessed to the crime, and say they wanted to establish their identity by eliminating the gang. All three men have a history of serving time in jail, and one of the men is alleged to have used a pistol made in Turkey that is believed to have been illegally imported into India. Internet services remain shut in Prayagraj district as part of the security measures taken in response to the shooting.
