G-7 pledges to speed up phase-out of fossil fuels but fails to agree on new deadline for coal

The G-7 Energy and Environment Ministers met in Sapporo, Japan to discuss the transition to clean energy and the need to phase out coal-fired power plants. The ministers agreed to work to hasten the shift but did not set a new deadline for coal. The G-7 leaders reiterated the need to urgently reduce carbon emissions and achieve a "predominantly decarbonized power sector" by 2035. The G-7 also endorsed Japan's national strategy emphasizing so-called clean coal, hydrogen and nuclear energy to help ensure Japan's energy security. China and other developing countries continue to make demands for more help in transitioning to clean energy and stabilizing energy prices and supplies. The G-7 leaders issued a communique calling for a transition to "predominantly" clean energy by 2035. The next talks are to be held in Dubai in late November.
