Renters being asked for SIN, driver’s licence and other sensitive information by some landlords

Renters in Calgary are being asked for Sensitive information like their social insurance number (SIN), driver's licence, and other sensitive information by some landlords in an effort to verify their identity and weed out potential bad tenants. Megan Plumtree and Vanessa Sih, both of whom have been looking for a rental property, say that they have been asked for this information in an invasive and uncomfortable way. While some landlords are requesting this information to ensure a tenant is a good fit for the property, landlords are not allowed to ask for sensitive information like this, such as driver's licence or banking information, and should instead only request information that is necessary for verification of identity. As long as a tenant is aware of what the purpose of collecting this information is and is comfortable with it, there are no negative consequences to refusing to provide this information.
