In 1908, the Prince Edward Island government banned the use of automobiles on the Island. This decision was made due to the concerns of the government about the safety of the vehicles and the fear that they would scare the horses and people on the Island. The ban lasted for three years and the vehicles were popular on the mainland and other provinces were benefiting from the tourism. However, the decision created a patchwork quilt of roads and was opposed by the majority of the Islanders.
