As attempts to restrict or ban books continue to surge in 2022, the American Library Association (ALA) has released a report documenting the growing number of challenges and their changing nature. The majority of the challenges (68%) come from conservatives, directed at books with LGBTIQA+ or racial themes. In many cases, hundreds of books are challenged in a single complaint. Librarians around the country have told of being harassed and threatened with violence or legal action. Despite these challenges, many books do come back to libraries after being removed.
