18 contenders jump into Turkey’s two-horse presidential race to unseat Erdogan

The 18 contenders for the Turkish presidency include a Maoist revolutionary, a son of Turkey's first Islamist prime minister, and a former member of Kemal Kilicdaroglu's party, who all want to unseat incumbent Recep Tayyip Erdogan. To compete for the presidency, they must jump through a series of hoops, including collecting 100,000 signatures of support and paying a fee of $29,000. Dogu Perincek, the 80-year-old leader of the Vatan Party, is the most controversial of the candidates, due to his past involvement in politics and his support for Russia over the United States. If he is successful in the elections, it will be the first time a non-Kemalist has won the presidency in Turkey.
