El Salvador’s New Mega Prison Sparks Controversy

The new Mega Prison in El Salvador has sparked controversy as it is said to be too large and could be used to detain political prisoners.

The new prison is said to be the largest in Latin America and is intended to house up to 10,000 inmates. It has been built in the city of San Salvador and is due to be completed in 2020.

The human rights group Amnesty International has called for the prison to be closed because of the "serious human rights violations" that are likely to take place there. The group has also raised concerns about the use of solitary confinement and the lack of access to healthcare.

El Salvador has been experiencing a reduction in violence since President Bukele took office in 2014, and the new prison is said to be part of his strategy to crack down on crime.
