In a six-month period, 1,539 Police Officers have been investigated for allegations of violence, sexual abuse or misconduct against women. Of these, 91% resulted in no further action being taken. 13 officers have been dismissed out of this total. Police chiefs have asked the Home Office to toughen up existing regulations, including barring anyone convicted or cautioned for violence against women and girls from policing, and re-vetting anyone accused of these types of crimes. The NPCC's research found that 16% of all crime in the six-month period was violence against women and girls. Women's Aid is working closely with police chiefs to improve the handling of gender-based violence.
